E-Bike Range Reality Index

The Range Reality Index converts the advertised range of every e-bike we cover into an honest, comparable number. For each model it lists battery watt-hours, a broad price band, a Wh-per-dollar value tier, the manufacturer's claimed range, and a realistic range band computed as 50-65% of the claim — because manufacturer figures are measured at the lowest assist level with a light rider on flat ground, a ceiling almost no real ride touches. Every realistic band is cross-checked against battery physics (Wh ÷ 15-25 Wh per mile), and models whose claims outrun their batteries are flagged.

Battery watt-hours computed from manufacturer-listed voltage × amp-hours where not stated directly. Price bands are broad editorial tiers, not current prices. "Wh check" divides watt-hours by the 15-25 Wh-per-mile consumption band; where the two lenses disagree, the watt-hour lens governs.

Methodology

The realistic band is 50-65% of the manufacturer's claimed range. This is our stated editorial heuristic, applied identically to every model. We set it there for two reasons, both documented rather than invented. First, manufacturer claims are measured under best-case conditions — lowest assist, flat course, light rider, mild weather — as detailed on our real-world vs advertised range page. Second, independent testing and aggregated rider reporting consistently place mixed real-world riding in the 50-70% region of advertised figures; Electric Bike Report's Aventon Aventure range test recorded 24.3 miles at maximum assist versus 53.7 miles at minimum assist on the same bike and battery — roughly a 45% result from the assist lever alone, before terrain, rider weight, or temperature. We adopt the lower half of the reported region (50-65%) because the Amazon-tier bikes this site covers are ridden throttle-heavy in practice, which consistently lands below pedal-assist figures.

Every band is then cross-checked against battery physics: watt-hours divided by the 15-25 Wh-per-mile consumption band used across this site and normalized in our companion Range Truth Index (which also covers assist-level impact, terrain consumption, cold-weather derating, and cycle life, with a downloadable CSV). Where a manufacturer claim is optimistic relative to its battery — flagged with ⚠ in the table — the watt-hour figure is the one to plan around. We do not test bikes physically, we do not invent figures, and corrections bump the version number rather than silently editing rows.

Because watt-hours are physics and claims are marketing. Two bikes in this Index illustrate it: the Jasion Thunder PRO claims 90 miles from 1040Wh while the ADDMOTOR M-81 claims 75 miles from 960Wh — the smaller battery claims more miles per watt-hour. Dividing watt-hours by a real consumption rate of 15-25 Wh per mile produces bands that are directly comparable across brands, which is why the Index reports both lenses and flags models where they disagree.

A broad tier — Exceptional, Strong, Moderate, or Premium-priced — comparing each model's battery watt-hours against its broad price band. We use tiers rather than computed dollar figures because we do not publish exact Amazon prices (prices change constantly and Associates policy restricts quoting them). The tier answers the practical question: for the band this bike sells in, is its battery unusually large, about right, or something you are paying a premium beyond?

Because the claim is a best-case laboratory ceiling: lowest pedal-assist level, flat closed-course pavement, a light test rider, no wind, mild temperature. Change any input — throttle use, hills, a heavier rider, stop-and-go traffic, cold weather (a temporary 15-30% capacity loss in typical winter commuting), under-inflated tires — and consumption rises. Stack several, as normal riding does, and 50-65% of the claim is the honest expectation, not the pessimistic one.
